SMR Manuals
SMR is self-myofascial release, a series of self-massage techniques you do by yourself with implements such as rollers and balls to improve how well you move your body. By combining assessment, therapeutic, and full-range functional movements with SMR, you can maintain your performance much longer than previously possible.

SMR FundamentalsThis excerpt from the SMR Manual includes the 18 foundational SMR movements that you should do at least once every 2 weeks to maintain proper range of motion and joint function. Movements with red titles are the 3 primary regions, and they should be done at least once each week. The remaining blue titles should be done at least 2 per day to balance out your week. By practicing the 18 fundamental SMR exercises, you have a minimal self-therapy program to maintain your muscles in healthy condition. You might need the assistance of a licensed massage or physical therapist in conjunction with your SMR efforts to get your best results, much like you need a toothbrush and floss along with a dentist to maintain tooth and gum health. Myofascial Pain & DysfunctionThe Trigger Point Manualby Dr. Janet Travell & Dr. David Simons This 1664-page Manual is known as “the red bible” by massage therapists, chiropractors, physiotherapists, and just about anyone that works on the body to address pain. For trainers and coaches is can be a tremendously valuable resource for looking up examples of biomechanic issues caused by muscular dysfunctions. While much of the treatment side in the book is intended for the therapist (and should NOT be done by an unlicensed trainer or coach), the education of knowing which muscle(s) may be causing the movement dysfunctions in the workouts will empower the coach to make more appropriate warm-up, stretching, and SMR recommendations. |
